VISIT TO BERNARD MIZEKI SHRINE

Going to Bernard Mizeki Shrine in June  every year as a family is a unique, spiritual and cultural experience.
We went to the shrine for a lovely Anglican church service that included traditional Zimbabwean hymns and chants and was conducted by local Clergy. It was a true blessing to hear moving sermons and contemplations on Bernard Mizeki’s life and legacy.
We also took in energetic singing performances by church choirs from many denominations and ethnicities, singing both modern and traditional songs and hymns. We had a true taste of Zimbabwe’s and the Anglican Communion’s rich musical legacy.

We had the chance to interact with Anglicans from different Zimbabwean dioceses as well as foreign visitors, such as Priests, Clergy, and laypeople. We exchanged tales, insights, and viewpoints regarding religion, and society.

After church service, we participated in a procession to the mountain where Bernard Mizeki vanished, a holy site designated by a cross, Local clergy and church leaders led us in prayers, hymns, and rites.

Other highlights included visiting the surrounding hamlet, where we learned about traditional Zimbabwean culture and way of life, and touring the shrine’s museum, which commemorates Bernard Mizeki’s life and legacy. The highlights were when we ate native food and participated in traditional drumming and dancing.

We took a moment of silence and reflection to consider the importance of Bernard Mizeki’s life and legacy, as well as how his tale encourages resiliency, faith, and hope. examining how our perception of the world and our role in it is shaped by the intersections of faith, culture, and community.

We anticipate a profoundly spiritual and enlightening experience from this visit that will last long after leaving the shrine.
